Trade goods vanish if the planet they were developed on is conquered

I thought this deserved it's own thread even though the gist of this is
incorporated in the thread entitled "Carinoids are still running away with the game".

A trade good developed on a planet that is later conquered effectively vanishes
from the game at that point. It still shows up as "built" on the planet detail
screen but the conquering race doesn't get the bonus associated with the trade good
nor can they trade it to anyone.

This doesn't feel like correct behavior.

Magus,

I thought a trade good belonged to the race that developed it, not the planet. I guess this is something Brad is going to have to arbitrate.

I would think that the conquring race should get the bonus from it, since the original factory, and thus presumably the production specs for the trade good, was just captured, but they probably shouldn't be able to trade it.

WHile I agree with Jack, who is going to protect the "patent rights" of an extinct species?

I don't know about "protection" of an extinct civ's patent rights, but I could guess that the other civs would look at a new producer of the same trade good with extreme suspicion. Perhaps we are supposed to view it as other races would view it as an inferior or defective product or an ineffective imitation? Do you think the UK would buy Iraq's version Coca Cola if the US suddenly dissapeared?

Jack,
if Canada conquered the US would the UK still buy Coca Cola? YES! Whether a trade good production location could be moved is another question. Could the US produce Coca Cola in Hawaii and continue?
I personally think trade goods should be restricted to a single production location as this also explains why other races can't duplicate it. Whether it gets conquered or lost when that location is captured is another issue.

Paul,

In your case the Coca Cola would probably NOT be a knock off. In my case (Iraq), it probably would be a knock off. Big difference.

Besides, patents for the USA are kept in Washington DC, regardless of where the product originated. I am sure that if the capital of a civ is endangered the patent office would be moved to a safe place, ensuring that the patent stayed with the civ.

The issue, to me, is that the trade good exists as a physical construct in the fashion of an object that shows
up on the list of items built on the planet in question. It can never be built again anywhere else in the game.

It still exists on the planet after it is conquered and yet it is unusable after conquest.
