Backgrounds won't show up.

This has beeen happening for a while now. My background always stays the same color- grey. It used to be able to change, but it stoped after I got a virus (which is gone now). When my computer starts up, it shows the background, but when it's finished, it goes to grey.
I try to change it under desktop, but when I click on a choice, it doesn't do anything.

Can anyone help me out here?

try: right click the desktop > arranage icons by > uncheck "lock web item on desktops" (if it's checked)
