Question About Drengin Empire Population Growth

What is the secret to their population growth? In my current game, I found four class 26 planets, I have more that one third of the galaxy to myself (good start, I thought...). Yet the Drengin population growth is exponential while mine is linear and barely keeping up with the rest (who may have a handful of planets). I am playing a gigantic galaxy with all genius players. It seems to happen in every game that the Drengin population grows incredibly fast.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on but I had my head handed to me last night by the Drengin, all races set to smart, medium galaxy size. They were before I was able to produce a single constructor to harvest the resources nearby the Drengin had snagged every single one.

The other races popped up in the diplomacy screen pleading for covert assistance against the Drengin, which I provided, but the Drengin gradually wiped everyone out.
