I know the AI will declare war on you if they feel they're militarily superior, but I think they should look at other stuff too...

I usually don't build any ships until I need to. Because of this my military power is usually pretty low. Today the Drengin declared war on me, I assume, because I was less militarily powerful than them. The problem was that I had WAY more planets than them, WAY more production than them and a lot more tech. They declared war on me with their little Star Fighters and then I started pumping out mass Corvettes and had them begging for mercy. Of course I didn't give them any, they should have known that I could stomp them in a heart beat... The first planet I asked for was their capitol, which they gave me just for peace.

Which brings me to another question... do the capital planets do anything special other than having a little symbol beside them?

The AI looks at lots of factors such as economics as well.

regarding capital ploanets - lose a capital planet and there is a chance (though small) of your civilization splitting into three new civilizations.

the problem with AI is that it doesn't know how to fight. Sometimes it declares war and you don't get attacked for years, and then they come begging for peace without either side losing any planets.
Even when AI does manage to capture some planets, they are way too slow and grossly inefficient.

Here's one suggestion: before AI declares war, make AI prepare a decent invasion fleet near the future enemy planets. Once war is declared, battles should be swift and decisive. AI needs to be prepared to take over at least 1/3 of enemy planets within 2 years. (that includes flying time)

If you noticed an Alien fleet building in the next system over would you wait for them to send the fleet over ?

smart people wouldn't, but then the enemy will declare war on you, not other way around, which is a plus, especially in democratic governments.

Besides, such preparation for war is necessary either way. And by making your enemy declare war, you buy some time.

but i built terror stars next to their last 5 planets waited for them to get declare war (took a long time so i completed all the terror star) then wiped their civilization out in 1 move. I think if i was them i'd have attacked the terror stars when the first terror star module was built. Of course i was going to destroy them if they attacked me too late. Maybe the Stardock people will up their angst :D

Master Lame, you are making a big assumption in your planning - that wars are only fought for territorial conquest. I just fought three wars with the Arceans, and not one was about territorial conquest. They were about resources. I amassed a fleet large enough to be intimidating, but not large enough to conquer their territory, moved it and a bunch of constructors to where they had a starbase built on a resource, took the starbase down, built my own on top of it, and sued for peace. Did that three times.

I needed the Arceans alive. First, they were a major trading partner. Second, they were in between me and the Yor, and I knew the Yor had designs on my territory (and the Arceans). Keeping the Arceans pitted against the Yor and holding just enough firepower to keep their ambitions in check allowed me to concentrate on building my industrial and technological base.

i totally agree with you about using an a.i. as a buffer zone. also inducing other a.is to attack the one who is attacking you will speed along the eventual peace offering

One thing that is a little odd is that the AIs declare war too early (in my opinion). If I have transports and defenders around my worlds, and they have a couple of starfighters, they'll gleefully send them to their destruction. They'll also attack me wherever and whenever they can, rather than pick a single world and try and take it. (AI set of Average)
