Custom Portraits

How to change file type

Hi, I have searched the forums for an answer as to how I can use a custom portrait in-game. Found nothing specific, but I did notice that someone said that their portrait package had all of their portraits saved as .png, or .pgn. I figuered if I could save my picture as that file type it would work; however, I cannot manage to do that. Is there another program I need to do this?

Thanks

Simply load it into Paint (copying and pasting works, or opening the saved file). Then choose Save As... and select filetype .PNG

In v1.2, and presuming the functionality is there (some of the folders aren't recognized), you should save the file in a new folder you make located in GalCiv 2/Mods/(Name Here)/Gfx/Race

To follow the standard naming conventions (just to be safe, it may or may not be allowed to make whatever name), call it RaceImage##. The numbers 10 to 29 are available, as are 40 to 49, and 60 to 99 are completely free. I would save it at least at 60 just in case there's a reason numbers are skipped (but a lot of modding is educated guessing and checking).

Now, go into the game and go to options. Make sure Mods are turned on, and select the Mod folder you put these new race images into. Now you should have new images. As far as I can tell (and from what I've seen in the past), no XML modding should be needed for this.

You could also put it in my documents/my games/GalCiv2/portraits if you don't want to have to use a mod.

Rasori's way is indeed one possible way of doing it. However if you are playing a Metaverse game you cannot use the mods. So if you are only using the image for yourself at the start then load the .png image (120x120 or above for best results) into 'my documents/my games/GalCiv2/portraits '. Clicking the arrow keys under the race image on the starting config screen will then cycle through to the new image you loaded.

Custom portraits are only visible at the beginning of the game and for some reason do no more than that, so unless it really means a lot to you i wouldn't bother with it.

Custom logos use the same principal as the portraits but are placed in the '\My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Logos' folder. You should also ensure they have their transparency set as they will appear better in the game. If you are not sure how to do this then just use a black background as it will be nearly impossible to see.
