Can't install the latest Security Update for .Net

(KB917283)

Automatic Updates keeps failing to install Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283).
I also downloaded it from the microsoft website and ran it. The progress meter gets about halfway through then the window just disappears.
Anyone else having this problem?

If I had to guess, your firewall is blocking the processes it needs to run.

This is the first time there has been a problem with a windows update, so I'm doubting the firewall angle is it...

OK...I assume you were able to install the other updates and that you have 2.0 framework already installed. If both are correct, then boot into safe mode and execute the downloaded update from there.

Hold on....you running One Care on your machine and/or have an ATI card?

I'm actually seeing the same thing on my box right now. Going to see if a reboot fixes it.

Here's the fix fellas...you'll love it:

1: Turn automatic updates off.

2: Download .NET 2.0 (for 32-Bit) :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

(Note: If you use ATI VGA you must disable/exit the Catalyst Control Center before updating the framework.)

3: Uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 and reboot.

4: Install Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 and reboot.

5: Then run MS Update and install KB917283 then reboot.

6: Turn automatic updates back on

Direct all thank you notes to Microsoft........

I was unable to install .NET Framework 2.0 until I had to do a reformat/reinstall of my boot drive (recently, for unrelated reasons). Can't remember, but I think I did Windows updates (including .NET install) before installing Catalyst... Hmmmmmmm

Trying to load the MS update page just hangs....

No sign of net 2 installed...just 1 / 1.1, whatever...

don't laugh but I'm still using the integrated intel graphics, so catalyst isn't an issue.

about to attempt the fix, will let you know how it goes

OK...cleaned out all the net junk....re-installing '2'...then another reboot....

It worked. Mostly. When trying to run Windows Update it seemed to hang, so I ran the downloaded update. It still took about 5 or 6 minutes for the update to install, but it worked
Thanks yraq!
