New to GalCiv

I've just picked up my copy of Galactic Civilization, and since registration opened up the door to the forums to me, I figured I'd introduce myself.

So, hello! I look forward to reading everyone's posts.

With that said, I have a question. I've been out of Sci-Fi strategy games, and while I was reading up on GalCiv, I noticed that 4X games was used to describe sci-fi strat games. Could someone explain where that term came from? Google didn't provide much help.
