Cade: My thoughts on Tova7's novel-in-progress

In my humble opinion, this book belongs in every bookstore, next to the most popular modern novels.

The other night it took me about an hour to print out the first 25 chapters of Tova's novel. She gave me the go-ahead to do so, even though I didn't really ask, I just said, "Hey, can you give me your links so I can print this out?" :)

My printer was slow, and I had to manually collate the pages. But I didn't doubt it'd be worthwhile because she's a terrific writer and I was curious to see what she would do in the world of fiction. And I prefer reading print to a computer screen ANY DAY.

So here I am giving Cade a chance...it's a genre I wouldn't normally have ever tested...but I'm enjoying it.

I promised to give Tova feedback along the way. (Everyone read Cade if you get a chance! And leave comments!) Since I'm reading Cade away from the computer, I'll leave some of my thoughts here rather than going back to insert comments at the end of each of her chapters. If it's OK with Tova, I'll pass on the links to her novel at the end of my spiel.

I've read 7 whole pages so far, which in my Word Document printout brings me part way through chapter 4. I'm pausing so early in my reading to give Tova some feedback because if I don't seize the opportunity now, I may forget something. Also, my "real life" keeps me pretty busy, so I'm stealing a moment here after the family has fallen asleep. Here's what I've gleaned so far, and what I'm enjoying:

I'd classify the genre as part sci-fi, due to the setting opening on an alien planet with two suns. Part fantasy due to the inventive fictional names and setting. And part spiritual due to the "Legnas" which I immediately caught on as being "Angels" spelled backwards... (my friends & I used to play a childhood game of spelling and pronouncing our names backwards...and, well, my name was "Alegna.") Back to the point...the introduction of the Legnas at the beginning of Chapter 2 had me instantly absorbed. I love the idea of guardian angels, and so few people believe in such things, much less talk or write about them, that these characters made me feel a sense of comfort that may perhaps serve as an anchor as the story unfolds.

The device of female sexuality that opens chapter 3...very Hollywood. But I understand the need and the appeal for it. It's natural, everyone can identify with sexuality, it's beautiful and familiar. So it brings the book all the more to life and will have the male readers engrossed. In fact, I can easily see every bit of this book played out on a movie screen.

This book ...I wonder why Tova is trusting the seemingly- ungrateful JoeUser community with her work of art...rather than GOING STRAIGHT TO A PUBLISHER!!?? Yes, Tova, in my humble opinion, this book belongs in every bookstore, next to the most popular modern novels.

OK, I'm going off to bed to read some more now. I feel compelled to show Tova my library card in exchange for the privilege of reading this...or to PAY her, as I would be paying the author if I bought the book off the shelf. Well when that happens I'll always be able to say that "I knew her when..." :)

Wow Angela thank you for that review!

I've been gone for most of the weekend, but when I saw your title...hahaha...my heart started racing! I can still feel it beating hard through my shirt.

Glad you like it, um, so far. heh.

Make sure to tell me if you think it gets too slow in parts....I understand some parts are more liked by women than men and so the men say "ugh, its dragging here" and visa versa...but I still need the feedback!

The reason I am posting this on JU is because I need to be "done" with something...see I have other books I've written but never done anything with because I edited and re-edited and edited again....and that's the quickest way to kill a piece imo. But its a bad habit posting on JU will break. Because once its out there.....well I can't change it! Not the story line anyway.

I appreciate all the time you took writing this out and feel very honored you chose to do so.

Thank you very much.

Angela! Wow we are on the same wavelength. I just came on to write an articla about Cade. Like you I prefer reading print to the screen. I printed half out and was finally able to print the rest out recently. I started reading it this afternoon and finished it!

EVERYONE should read this. In the beginning I started writing notes so that I could give good feedback. I quickly forgot about them because I was so absorbed in the story. I couldn't read fast enough.

I loved the Legnas immediately as well. I like the apprentice idea. I won't say more to be a spoiler. The sexy lady reminded me of a Mata Hari type. Loved it.

Good vs. Evil. Spirituality, fantasy and there was one part that was gloriously nasty! I like the characters and hate some (that is a good thing). I was on the phone with friends of mine who don't blog here and there is a waiting line ready to read.

Tonya, I knew you were talented but I didn't expect to get so totally engrossed in this story. I care about Cade and I love Razer. Hurry Up!

I will keep up with the story and comment as chapters are written. I didn't want to bombard old chapters that maybe you wouldn't find.

Dr. Guy is the smartest one here. He knew a good thing from the beginning!

I echo every sentiment Angela wrote. Fantastic.

Thank you Kelly.

Wow, I am so humbled by your response. I didn't really think this was a story women would like...I am so glad to see I am not the only woman who enjoys fantasy! Woo hoo!

Sometimes when I am at the bookstore browsing....I'm the only girl!

I'm not complaining or anything...

Thank you guys for reading and giving feedback. Even if its not always good I am still appreciative!

You rock!

OK, well I'm a slow reader, or I can blame it on my family who I never seem to be able to get free from!

I'm on Chapter 21 and am totally loving it. This is intelligent writing. Smart, smart, smart. It's unpredictable, and keeps us begging for the next chapter, the next turn of events. Love it.

Here's the beginning of your fan club Tonya, at least those of us who've spoken up so far! My husband is next in line to read the loose-leaf printout. He was begging me to know what all the hoopla was about after enduring the glow of my booklight at night and the flutter of pages in bed. Then he read this article on Saturday. So I gave him a verbal synopsis and he was pretty darn interested. Not only was he interested in the story, but I imagine he was surprised that such a genre has captured my attention.

Smart, smart, smart.

Oh Angela that is wonderful about your husband....perhaps he can give feed back through you? As a woman I wonder when I write a man if he is strong enough....or "would a guy say that?" heh. (My husband will not read a word I write..he only reads non fiction and has never really enjoyed "stories." So I don't get a male perspective.)

Glad you are liking it...I'm in research mode right now...nothing major just familiarizing myself with the art of war! And nothing to do with slugs!
