Trade out of United Planets

I was playing a game and the United Planets voted to share all tech (ack). So I left. After this you are no longer able to trade, which I can see. But I think you should be able to trade with an ally if you have one or form a new alliance.

If the various races could trade amoungst themselves without having to be in the UP, then there would be no reason to be in the UP in the first place. Personally I think the UP adds an interesting dynamic to the trading system, in that the potential to get wealthy by trade is offset by the potential restrictions the UP might enforce.
