Are Victory Conditions (De)Selectable?

Greetings.

I was reading the moo3 board over on apolyton was intrigued by a comparison of galciv with moo3.

With the understanding that what little I know of galciv I've learned today week while browsing this site, I have a question about victory conditions.

Principally, I understand that there are four ways to win:

1. Conquering the galaxy militarily
2. Conquering the galaxy culturally
3. Technological victory
4. Political victory

My question is if you can (de)select which "victories" are used in a game (i.e. can I play the game so that I can *only* win via (for example) "military" victories).

This may sound petty, but I hate missing the chance to wipe away the last of the galaxies vermin simply because I *win* a (so called) cultural victory. Frustrating! I prefer to be able to chose what constitutes a "victory" for myself.

Any information would be welcome. Thanks.

One of the features to be included in the Bonus Pack (which will be released the same day as GC) will be beefed up game setup screens. You'll now have control of several of the games features, of which toggling vitory conditions will be available. We'll also be putting in a better ability pts. distribution meathod, multiple new options when tweaking the opposing races, more control over star placement, and for new players, a "Tutorial Mode" to help you out the first year of gameplay. Hope this all helps :)

Oops, sorry. No, the first bonus pack is free, and additional updates and expansions will be available well past the inital release. If i remember right, some of the smaller updates will be free, whereas major expansion packs will come at an extra cost. Have'ta wait for the official word from Brad on that one, though. ;)

Thanks for the quick response.
And it's even the answer I was looking for.

It may seem minor to some - but (de)selectable paths to victory is a requirement for me on such games. It's just not worth the frustration I feel when I'm having fun in a game and it suddenly ends via a "less concrete" (typically cultural, etc) victory condition that I didn't even know I was close to reaching. Just kind of ruins the fun for me.

That said, and your encouraging response read - I can't wait for galciv's release. :CONGRAT:

Thanks

Nomikos,

Civ3 has the exact same problem you are describing, and, fortunately, has toggles to disable various victory conditions. But after over a year in the GC test program I have to wonder if the same type of toggles in GC are really going to be used that much. There is just no comparison between the abrupt way CIV3 gives you a totally unexpected win and how well GC lets you strive for a particular type of win (while the AIs are trying for other types of a victory).
