Designing Space Stations

Why can't we?

Seems every sci-fi strategy game has abilities to mob, create and custom your ships.

Why not starbases?

Thoughts?

Actually I'd LOVE to do my own starbases, but it would be impractical. First, the initial starbase of each type does almost nothing, and it would be cheesy to build a zomfgingly good starbase with just one constructor. Maybe if you either had to pay a whole lot of money(not too good choice here) or design every starbase individually, let's say a starbase is a no-movement starship that starts with 5 room, and every constructor that comes in after that adds 10 more room onto the starbase. But that would be a long and tedious process. I don't have an elegant solution for this, unfortunately.

Agreed. I've suggested something like this before, and probably other people have, too. Basically, if it's so much fun to do for ships, why not do it for bases, too?

Sadly, it will probably have to wait for GCIII, if then. It would be a lot to code and get the AI to use in an expansion pack. In game terms, though, I don't see why it would be terribly impractical; modules could have a BC cost, and you'd not only purchase a constructor but have to shell out BCs for construction (instead of automagically installing, say, Overlord Armor for free and with no mass or energy cost). If you wanted to add extra modules, you'd have to send out another constructor. In that respect it wouldn't be too different than the current system, the main exception being that you wouldn't have to manufacture and send out a billion contructors to get a starbase up to snuff. Influence victories wouldn't require endless streams of constructors and clicking to build essentially the exact same starbase over and over.

Heck, this might even result in a shot in the arm for milbases, too, since you could design effective bases in much the same way we do with ships. If you had the money, you could build a top of the line station.

Ah well. Fingers crossed.

They should do something. Normal starbases are underpowered when compaired to the ships you can build. Sure the total attack, and defense points for space stations are greater than any custom built ship, but it isn't that difficult to design a single ship specifically built to destroy space stations, let alone fleets of them. The ships in question merely has to do enough damage to destroy the station, not survive it. I would like it if they made space stations a little bit more difficult to destroy than a random attack.

Things that I would like to see:
-Higher defense values, stations are not built to attack the enemy, they serve others functions. Functions better served if they can survive attacks.
-Much more hit points. Huge hull ships have much more hit points than space stations. Having a space station to survive an attack against even one can be difficult, especially at higher tech levels.
-Faster rates of repair. Space stations should be able to repair faster, if for no other reason than they don't have to go anywhere in a hurry.

The trouble is that it really doesn't mesh with the whole constructor mechanic. Maybe for GC3, though.
