No music?!

I have a problem with GalCiv - I'm running ver 1.10 (which doesn't seem to matter as it was the same on the fresh install). There doesn't seem to be any music except for the one in movies and on the diplomacy screen. Also, even if i switch to 'User defined playlist', it does show the song name on the bottom of the screen, but still no music can be heard. I tried restarting, reinstalling, rebooting, switching music off and on again - all to no avail. I've checked the debug.err file and there are no sound-related alerts or errors. Dxdiag says my directsound's working ok (which figures, because i can play the mp3s from music folder with winamp normally and the soundfx plays in the game correctly). I tried downloading several codec packs, none of which worked. Then i downloaded the ms_mp3 codec from stardock. That didn't help either. So what do i do now?

Here are my system specs:
WinXP Pro
P4 1.7GhZ
256MB RAM
Sound Blaster Live Value
ATI Radeon 8500

oh. and i do have latest drivers for everything.

I have the same problem, sound effects and event music are there but no in game music. It used to work when i first got the game but only lasted a few hours before it disapeared for good! :sniff!:

Any ideas anyone?

But I play a CD of my own on the computer.
I can combine 2 hobbies now. ;)

Have you all installed the bonus & multimedia pack?

And there is a mp3 player build in galciv. It works fine in the latest versions. By the way, if you would take a piece of advice, install stardock central and get the latest versions of everything (patch, multimedia, bonus pack). It's far easier to keep up to date with that program.
For the mp3 player you just need to make a playlist (.m3u format I think) and save it to the correct folder in the galciv folder (playlist folder IIRC). Then you can load it within the game.

Bah, one of the first thing I do with all my games is turn off the music. Then I add my own soundtrack. Of course GalCiv allows you to do that with their own mp3 player. That's cool, but unecessary for me since my music collection is right next to my computer.

Go to the Main Menu and turn the User Defined Playlist to OFF. I think the default was change to ON in the last build.

Also, if you have winamp3 it was known to have buggy codecs.  You may want to upgrade to winamp5 if you haven't already.

I already said I tried it with the user defined playlist on and off, none of which works. It appears that there is no mp3 music at all (cause i don't get any by changing the song being played on user-defined playlist) besides the diplomacy screen. (I also don't have music on the research robot and stuff. Only movies and diplomacy). And i have Winamp5

Did you download the multimedia comoponent of the game from stardock central?

Check your prefs.ini file and see what the values are for DisableMusic and DisableEventMusic are.

Checked prefs.ini, everything's enabled. And unfortunately, Stardock doesn't seem to work for me. It can't connect to the master server (probably due to a restrictive firewall, which i can do nothing about :( )

sektor666, in stardock central there are proxy settings under the options that you can configure to be able to use Stardock Central with your firewall.

You just give it the address of your proxy server and the port.  If you don't know what it is, check your mail program to see if it's configured there, and copy those settings.

Is the firewall for a home or work network? If it's for home, did your ISP set it up for you? If so, they should be be able to give you that information.  If it's for work, they could probably tell you if there isn't a policy against installing personal stuff on work computers.

It was installed by my ISP, and they don't give tech info concerning their routers. All they're supposed to do is give me the router and the cable. And fix it if it breaks down. :(

Not currrently.  We probably won't put up another patch until 1.2 is ready, and that will be after Altarian Prophecy is out of beta.

Did you get a manual with your router? It should give you instructions for logging into your router and let you set a port for SDC.

I don't have the manual for my router, however I did find the manual for a similar model, back when I was trying to enable connection sharing on the thing. It appears that the router was created with security in mind, because none of the settings from the manual appeared on the router, and, as a matter of fact, most of the settings appeared as unintelligiblie abbrevations that only a Lucent technician can read :/.
I tried fooling around with it for a bit and ended up messing it up so it wouldn't connect to the 'net anymore. I had to call the ISP and get them over to fix it, which took a week, and the guy didn't even change the settings. He just put a disk in and restored the defaults. Anyway, I guess I'll just wait for the 1.2 patch.
