Fleet stacking versus individual ships.

In terms of effectiveness is it more effective to stack fleets or engage individually? Let me give you an example of a fight.. Say 3 ships. I do not know the classes involved but we'll say 3 ships of identical class and hit points encounter 3 more ships which are in a fleet. but the 3 other ships decide to flank and engage at multiple angles.. Who has the upper hand?

Fleets are only there to enable you to quickly move your ships - there are no combat bonusses.
Flanking, suprise and the like does no difference here :)

Perhaps I have been dreaming but I believe that when ships are grouped together, the game behaves differently when thy are attacked.

Eg. your 4 defenders on occupy one cell (but are not grouped), they get attacked by a capital ship one at a time until it has no moves left or wins/loses. If they were grouped together either 0,1,2,3 or all 4 get destroyed in one go without pause. So the difference is that you see the outcome quicker. There is no loss/benifit that I can see though.

However do bonuses from starbases always add at least its bonus value to its owner throw in an attack? Eg. I have a ship with attack 10 + starbase bonus of 5(15 total). will my throw be in the range 0-15 or a guaranteed 5-15 ie. you cant do a terrible throw.

Ideas anyone?
