I'm trying to identify the skin or mod or whatever used in this screencap, or barring that, suggestions for ones like (simple, semi-see-through).

Looks like "Samurize" to me, or something similar. You could achieve the same thing using DesktopX too. Try searching Customize.org for Samurize themes, it may be on there. This is the link to the Samurize website..... http://www.samurize.com/modules/news/
