PC Gamer GalCiv Review

I've grown up with PC Gaming ever since Civ I, Commander Keen, Doom etc. PC Gamer is THE games mag for myself and the online games communities I'm a part of.

I can't vouch for the US but here in the UK it's word is next to gospel (they have rarely screwed up on a review).

Brad can you say whether a review copy has been sent to the PCG UK and US teams yet? A good write up in PC Gamer would turn this forum into a mad house of new comers in a week =)

First contact: Greetings to all! This is my first post on this forum. Speaking from my own experience, despite the lack of hoopla in the printed press, I think that there will be steady growth of interest in GalCiv as the word begins to spread. From what I've read, this appears to have been the trend for quite a while; but I believe it will go mainstream in the coming months. I'd never heard of the GalCiv series until I started casting about for something to fill the void left in my life by the moo3 disappointment. What do I see as the main advantage of GalCiv over moo3? (Admittedly, without actually having played GalCiv)Glad you asked: my impression is that it has a clear vision. Brad obviously has a consitant and well thought out product in mind, and appears to have the rare ability to remain loyal to his vision while keeping an open mind to new ideas (both his and from others). Again, this is just the impression I get. This forum and web site in general is IMHO much cleaner better organized than that of moo3 (not to pick on moo3, but just by way of comparison) and there appears to be a much better exchange of information between fans and developers here, with a clear roadplan for the future. We know more about what and when GalCiv will update a month before release than we know about moo3 a week after its release. As a result of these impressions, I have every confidence in the world for GalCiv and its future in my galaxy. :)

Hi Lifewish,
welcome to the game :)
I couldnt agree with your observations about the board and the developers - very nice and clean, both of them ;)

I didn't mean to imply anything negative about the moo3 website. ;p
I just like the colors and clean, no-nonsense look of this site better. Just one of the many little things that add to my overall impression of this awesome looking game. :D

welcome Lifewish
the game is awesome, no if only my Terror Star could get over to Flemming's Game :-) hehe. There are great people on this forum and don't be afraid to ask any questions. Somebody will usually answer them. Actually you'll more than likely get mutiple answers. Flemming and I have played the gamma version and it's like stardock is releasing galciv 1.5 instead of 1.0 that's how much better it is in comparison to the last beta.

see you around the forum

Had to reply to Lifewish's comments. I have the same good feelings about GalCiv. Used to play Entrepreneur back in the day, that was the first time I had heard of StarDock, but even then the talk was about Galciv. With a release date, my order has been in at Amazon since I knew it was available for pre-order). I have been generally depressed by strategy games put out by the big boys for a while but have been impressed by industry vets that have gone the independant route in the last few years. With wargame designers at Battlefront & Shrapnel games leading the way, it seems, the future for professionally made start games with depth looks good. Just don't look to EA or Infogrammes for the best work.
