Warner Home Video has patented a new technology that could put an end to the pressure cooker that is Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD. The war, which will come to a head with the release of Microsoft's Xbox360 HD-DVD drive and the Playstation 3, which will read and play games or movies off Blu-Ray media, will hopefully be avoided. The new disc format can combine the two technologies with that of a standard DVD.
As detailed in the patent the disc will work by having "a Blu-ray top layer which also acts as a two-way mirror reflecting enough blue light to be read by a Blu-ray player," and at the same time "let through sufficient light for an HD-DVD player to disregard the Blu-ray recording and locate the HD-DVD layer underneath." The reverse side of the elaborate disc could then contain standard DVD information or simply be left blank.
From the details its seems that third party companies could save some money if they released a single disc for cross-platform games with the information on it for PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox360.
