Hybrid Strategies?

Hi,

For those of you with actual experience playing the game, are hybrid/combination strategies valid, or do you more or less need to focus on one of the 4 basic strategies more or less exclusively?

Also, do you pretty much have to decide how you will approach the game in the beginning before you actually see the map (and therefore know if that approach is likely to be viable given your starting location). It seems like it would be better of you could dynamically adjust your strategies to suit the environment/situations you find yourself in.

Hey I just realized I said "more or less" twice in the same sentence DUH! Can you edit your posts here to correct errors? :notsure:

I couldn't see any way to edit posts. I hope they add more features to this forum. Avatars would be nice.

I don't have the game, so I can't help you there.

Hybrid strategies are perfectly normal. I usually don't decide on my victory path until quarter way through the game when I see the other empire sizes and placements and also my resources. I do make an initial decision based when I spend my starting points (research, military, influence, ecomnomy), but I often then change my direction.

Sometimes you're forced into diplomatic or trade strategies (being caught between two larger civs with no resources in reach), but my strategy tends to be all over the map. ;) Since I usually play on a neutral footing, the bad guys get treated badly and the good guys get treated well. The Altarians tend to be jerks unless you outgun them, so that relationship can vary, too.

The map can make a big difference in how you play the game. Are civs nearby? -> are they minor civs that can be manipulated, rival major civs, friendly major civs that will be good trading partners? Are you stuck in a corner? -> are you stuck in a corner with lots of great planets that will let you develop quickly, are you stuck in a corner and left out of galactic politics and trade? And so on.

End transmission.
