Many layers of maps

If we wanted to add some realism, why not include 2 layers of map. One for interstellar travels, where you only see the star, and the "Warp" technology applies for speed, and the other, where you see the detailed view of a star system, and only "impulse" technology applies?

We could add some landscape to a solar system, with asteroid fields to avoid, or special anomalies. A ship that is going to be outrunned in interstellar space could fin a nearby star system to escape trough impulse engine, or simply stay low ("assieged", one may say) until reinforcement arrives...

We try to go for more stream-lined gameplay and fun over realism.

It's a lot easier to manage your empire with all of your planets right there on the main map.

Point taken.

However, when the systems are picture on the main map, you could select it (like good'ol GalCiv1). When you select it, a smallish "popup-map" would show the details of the system if you have sufficient sensor details. What would be the details? It depends on the ship's sensors and the range from where it scans.

Rank 1: Detect the system itself, # of planets
Rank 2: Detect other major astronomical in a system
Rank 3: Can specify the classes of planets
Rank 4: Can detect ships in the system.

What could this add to the game?

- More tech lines to specialize. We would have 2 kind of engines to research, and probably 2 lines of sensor (1 for range, the other for details).
- CARRIERS would be possible. If you build fighters with only impulse power, and Cargo hull with no weapons but with Warp power..
- If the technology (OURS! not the game's!) allows, we could even make the planets rotate in a system

(I add a warm "thanks" to CariElf for her quick answer. Even if it was to say a gentle and understanding "no" to the idea, designer's imput are always good for the morale.)

To be honest that sounds a lot like MOO2, which was a really great game. But I gotta back up carielf. I like the streamlined feel of scrolling in and out and not dealing with pop-ups.
