Atari Finalizes Restructuring

Atari announced late yesterday that they have completed "the final phase of our strategic restructuring," according to David Pierce, president and CEO of Atari. The last step in the restructure came with the sale of Enter the Matrix developer and Earthworm Jim creator Shiny Entertainment to Foundation 9 Entertainment. Foundation 9 now owns The Collective, Backbone Entertainment, Pipeworks, ImaginEngine, and Digital Eclipse and has over twenty titles currently in development.
"Shiny Entertainment fits well with the current studios of Foundation 9 and aligns with our long-term goals for the future," said John Goldman, chairman and CEO of the company.
"The studio has tremendous talent and experience working with big Hollywood franchises and will be working with us on a major, as-yet-undisclosed day and date release. The Shiny team will only add to our capabilities and technology base," he added.
Goldman also confirmed that Shiny founder Dave Perry had not been part of the deal, even though Perry had announced that he would be spearheading sales efforts after he left the company, which occurred shortly after it was put up for sale by Atari.
Although the deal's financial terms were not disclosed it is known that Atari will maintain The Matrix license and the Earthworm Jim franchise, including the in-the-works PSP port. Of note is that Goldman hinted that Shiny may be tackling a different movie tie-in game next.
Odd twist that Atari didn't try and receive more money for the additional franchise, especially since they ditched the more modern Driver franchise. Guess there's something to be said for the strength of retro-gaming.
