Besotted on the needles

*I always feel bad about listing my projects under the 'art' category, mainly because I don't consider them art.  However....I think that I should give myself a little more credit and understand that just as I cannot paint a picture to rival the Mona Lisa, so others cannot knit a stitch if their life depended on it.  So, I'm going to try and not feel so bad about listing under the 'art' category*

Ok, now that's out of the way, I can get down to business.

These are the arm warmers and scarf I made last weekend:

And this is the scarf I'm making for my mum's christmas gift (that's her and dad in the photo behind it, actually...along with my Febreze scent maker thingy):

The cable pattern is called 'Besotted' and is, as far as I can tell, an antique pattern that originated in Ireland. I decided to make it in a traditionally colored Aran yarn so the cabling can really speak.  If I'd have used anything else I'm afraid that the color would have been more prominent than the pattern.  Besides, mum's winter coat is a forest green color and the off white aran will go really well with it.  I'm making her a pair of fingerless mittens as well and I'll put a 'Besotted' cable on the back of the hands so that they'll match the scarf.

I decided to make mum this cabled scarf after my mother-in-law said she really liked the vine pattern scarf.  She (my mil) is getting a lavender vine pattern scarf for christmas now, but she just doesn't know it get, so ssshhhh!  Keep it to yourselves and don't tell her!

I'm hoping to finish the skull illusion scarf this weekend and also have the Besotted scarf complete by next weekend.  I've got a baby beanie on order to make and a couple of other little baby items to make before Thanksgiving (yeah, you know how they're for!).

That's what's on the needles this weekend!

That's a very odd name for a scarf/knitting pattern. Only other time I've heard the word was between SPC Raver and SGT Greywar. They were referencing a different defintion, however. Link

The scarf is beautiful, though, and your choice of color makes it seem ... traditional? No, classic. Antique, almost, although I'm sure it'll be a lot nicer and softer than a really old scarf. I'm sure she'll love it.

I think it has something to do with the pattern, the way it looks like a celtic unending knot.  It IS an odd name, though, you're right.

Traditional.  The off-white color is the traditional color to use to knit Irish/Celtic cables.  Ever see a fisherman's sweater with all the cabling on the front?  They're the same color as the yarn I'm using.  It's got a little silk in it, so it's VERY soft.  I didn't want to use 100% wool for a scarf; it'd have been too scratchy and itchy to wear comfortably.

I've been looking for you this weekend, but haven't been able to catch you online.  I'll try again tomorrow...

I couldn't see your patterns, (thank you utah national guard for protecting me from seeing knitting, which I understand may contain pornagraphic material that would warp my pwecious wittle mind), erm....where was I......

Oh yeah, so I searched around on line until I found the besotted pattern, it's beautiful.

P. S. I just finished my first scarf. Okay, I cheated and used the thick chenille.......but I still finished! Thank you for driving me to it with curiousity. I'm starting another one for my wife. And then a little hat. And an afghan........

As I am currently besotted (what can I say, I'm part irish) I was expecting something a tad different

Why not post it under art? Art is in the eye of the beerholder, or something like that.

Seriously, while it's probably more crafts than arts, the line is thin at best. Very nice work.

BTW, where is my scarf?

I want one like Dr Who.

Yeah, I can't get a decent shot of the cabling because of the yarn color.  I'm glad that you went and looked for it, though!

Your scarf is on the production list, and will be started and completed before Christmas.  The Dr Who style won't be a problem; I can use up some of my stash making it.  I have a photo of his scarf around here somewhere, so I'll try and make it as authentic as I can!

Thank you!  And yes, I DO know how much you loved it, but I think that's because you're an artist too (scrapbooking) - you have an appreciation for things that people make with their own hands.

The other baby beanie is on the needles too, btw.  I'll take a photo of it this weekend!
