Thoughts on technology in GalCiv

It'd be nice to have a greater number of tech advances that result in more substantive changes/additions to the gameplay. Most techs now simply give bonuses to some statistic (or allow you to build something that gives those bonuses), instead of affecting gameplay in a more hands-on way. For example, when I saw "Transporters" (or "Teleporters" - I don't remember which) come up on the tech tree, I thought researching that might lead to ships being able to teleport from one planet to the next (I think moo2 did this) or to some other cool use - instead, researching "Transporters" does nothing but boost morale 10%, or something along those lines. Another example would be with "Star Creation" - it would be neat if researching that line of tech actually resulted in being able to plop down star systems around the galaxy.

I just recently played my first game where I went through the entire tech tree, and I was a little disappointed that advanced researching didn't really give me a whole lot extra to do (particularly towards the end of the tech tree, I started becoming very aware that nearly all of the techs just gave statistic bonuses, instead of introducing a new *something* that I could do in the game).

It'd be nice to have more tech advances that result in something beyond a bonus or new ship type (the ability to create terror stars is probably one example already in the game of what I'm talking about - where a technology advance introduces the ability to interact with the game universe in a totally new way).

What do you guys think about this?

We've discussed things like you mention, but there were limits on what could practically be done for 1.0. There are already all sorts of other bits in the code for providing different bonuses, creation, etc., but they're not hooked up to any of the techs at the moment.

Cool - so it sounds like this is something that will likely be addressed in the expansion packs Stardock has planned..? :)

Just from the sound of it, this sounds like something that may not be doable on a bonus pack level. I would expect this to require a whole new version. But then, I am not one of Stardock's fabulous development team.
