Another proposed fix to the possible HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray battle has arisen by the way of hardware design rather than the universal media format that Warner Home Video patented late last month.

Japanese chip designer NEC announced that they have created a chip that will enable Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to be read on the same device, essentially creating the ability for a multi-format DVD player. The company believes that a hybrid player could drive the costs down for any company hoping to support both formats, leading to quicker adoptions of both technologies.

NEC, who bested Pioneer and LG, companies that both announced efforts to create such a player, hopes to begin shipping the chips in April 2007.
