Controlling the senate?

I've seen several references about needing to retain control of the senate to get your bonuses, but I don't understand exactly how you go about accomplishing this control. Also, what "bonuses" exactly do you lose when you lose control of the senate?

Well... The "control" is really your approval rating. If your people like you they'll vote for your party. If you care leaching them dry with taxes, well than some other party might win.

The bonuses are party specific, for example, Populist party gets +20% diplomacy and morale. You lose the control of the senate, you lose the bonus.

Ok cool, thanks.

The manual states that the more advanced the form of government you use, the more difficult it is to retain control of the senate. How does this work? Do you just need higher approval ratings to "win" the election? Can you choose not to use the advanced forms of government if your approval is shaky?

More advance forms of governments at the moment just grant higher economic benefits in return for lower moral benefits. The lower moral makes it harder to maintain a high approval rating. The approval rating rewuire to win the senate does not change, it just becomes harder to maintain it (but you get lots more cash!)
