Hello I am a good looking woman of 40 and you would never know I was 40 if I didnt tell you. I have Multiple Sclerosis. As soon as I tell people they imediately see a wheelchair and drooling in there head. Thats not it. That wont happen until most of us with the disease until our 80s and 90s. We are great with the medications they have today we can have sex and carry a relationship just fine!!!!! Mary040

HI , ETHELor is it mary?
I am a 41 yr old woman who also has MS. I have PRogressive form, and am pretty close to a wheel chair. No meds are working for me. I feel alone with this damn disease as well. However I do have 3 children and a husband who is not supportive. Ihope you find someone tht is understanding and supportive. I just wanted you to know that you really aren't alone. Take care of yourself, Chele

I find that people can't be afraid of what they don't know. If nobody knows you have MS, they can't be afraid. It's only after you tell them you have MS, this is when the potential for fear emerges.

It's similar to how I look at carrying a consealed gun. Most people, if they can see your pistol will make a judgement or become frightened. Oh my, look, that guy has a gun. However, if it's consealed, and nobody can see it, then they are not afraid.

I was going to say my best friend {gimpyone} has MS too, and to maybe talk with her.

Chele and I talk almost everyday on the phone due to the distance between us, she lives in NH I live in CA.

You cant place a totally different Gun subject in with a disease the two are not similar.

No, I never said they were, but the fear is similar. Face it, people cannot be afraid of what they either do not know, or cannot see.

That was my point. BTW, your link does not work.

Actually, there are similarities:

MS kills, so do guns.
MS frightens people, so do guns.
MS causes people to make judgements, so do guns.

Well, theres a few anyway.

I am sorry but MS does not kill it only debiltates. Why does MS frighten people now? MS does not cause people to make judgements only experiences do.

Hi Ethel1040,

You mentioned being afraid of what you don't know and that you had MS (apparently stable at present). I don't know if you had already discussed the disease with your doctor(neurologist) or what you already know about it, but I'm going to share with you what I know about the disease because I sense from the title of your post that you do want to know more about it. While it may be true that there is nothing conclusive known
about how MS is caused at present and therefore its management have been symptomatic, at best, some theories are worth considering. One that intrigued me was that of a "dormant" virus or the slow progressive effect of a childhood virus (with Measles as a possible suspect)on our immune system. Like any other foreign body, it incites our body to produce an antibody against it (the virus). Apparently, (and no one to date has satisfactorily explained why)the antibody produced did not only work against/neutralize the virus but also worked against the fat tissue coating our nerves, so that the nerve was rendered non-conductive/dysfunctional. We could liken this to a number of electrical cables whose insulating rubber were eaten up by rats
leaving a short-circuited area of exposed copper wires. Anyway, people involved in finding out more about this theory are trying to see if they could work out some cure. At least I'm glad you're ok.

Hello,
Thanks for the comment. I do know everything about MS, I have read 30 some odd books in order to build a proper web site which I am doing now. I have lost freinds because of this disease to The Dont Know factor. I have lost a Fiancee, and its hard for me to date because when I tell the men they look at me like I have a Big Green Head lol.

OK

Why does MS frighten people now?

Why do people with MS seem to have a difficult time finding relationships? Why are people afraid to have relationships with them?

MS does not cause people to make judgements only experiences do.

If you say so. But then again Im sure the same could be said of all judgmental things.

Whether or not guns shae any similarities with MS or otherwise, the fact remains undisputed that:

People cannot be afraid of something they either cannot see, or that they are unaware of.

Thank You, That was very insightfull and I may use it on my web site. I think it would help so many of us with this disease understand why people are so judgemental. I need your permission of course.
