Making People

I love invading but I seem to always be limitied to running out of people for marines. I always try the traditional stuff like gettig the aphrodisiac trade good, the habibtat improvement and moral bonuses and such.
Now i have a new plan, the population of a planet is not a real populaton but only tax players, so if i had a planet with 1 mil taxpayers and a moral of 60, i could max out the propaganda and then drop my tax rate to zero for one turn, then on the next turn, i hope more taxpayers would be reporting, so i can load up a million troops and still have a decent amount to continue to repopulate, and return the tax rate to normal.
Does anyone think that it would work?

An even better way of getting troops is to trade the enemy for their troops! They will gladly give you a Combat Transport chock full of their best combat marines for a couple of techs or a few thousand BCs. Conveniently, they are subtracted from the planet they are taken from as well, reducing the defense! LOL

But to answer your question, yes...that sounds like it might work. But it might take more than one turn.

Only take marines from planets with lots of people in to start with, it has less of an impact on your growth e.g.

Planet Y 10 bil pop, growth rate is 5%, pop growth per turn would be 500 million, take five billion off on a transport and pop growth drops to 250 million (5% of five bil), a 50% reduction in growth

Planet z 30 billion pop, growth rate 5%, next turn it would grow by 1.5 billion, transport of five billion pop growth would be 1.25 billion, a 16.6% reduction

Moral of the story is big planets recover quicker :)

Exar :)

The population never grows by more than 200 million a turn, unless you drop the tax rate and black market people join the taxpayers.

Thanks, i escpecially like the trading for troops. I do take the troops off the big planets first, but when i bleed them dry then i start on the smaller planets. The best solution i had was once i invaded two systems and a third system full of people in the same sector flipped to me, that system gave me enough troops to continue my invason for 3 more systems!

How come you can disband transports with people on them, and destroy colonies? Shouldn't it count as an atrocity and make you evil

in my last game, my morale was 100% for most of the game and by Feb2200, I was running out of troops. planets whose populations over 20,000mil are my troop producing planets. I rarely get a planet with over 30,000 - they just seem to stop growing, even though morale is 100%.
Is there a cap to population size?

Yep - 100 billion which I only every reach if I get to a silly game year like 2210, otherwise I normally get one with 40 bil on. Its probably because your taking the troops off :)

When you dispand the transport you probably just say to the captain "Ok, we don't need this ship anymore. It's all yours," and the people on board fly it to the nearest planet. And you don't actually blow up a planet when you distroy a colony. Everybody has two weeks to book passage to the planet of their choice (where it takes them quite a while to find jobs, which is why you don't see any increase in taxpayers on other planets.) :)

No...no, I'm pretty sure I just plant a few bombs and blow them pesky colonists to smithereens. Quietly, of course, so as not to wake the neighbours up ;D

Hey, if people don't know about it, they won't consider me evil :D

I empty the colony first with a transport. Don't want to waste valuable cannon-fodder.

Oops, when I said "valuable cannon-fodder" of course I meant "valued citizens"
