Daily Love Tip #25

Eat Dinner Together At The Table

Are you always eating on the run? Tonight, will dinner amount to grabbing a quick burger from a drive-thru? If so, you're missing out on an opportunity to communicate with your mate.

As often as possible, share your meal at the table in the quiet of your own home. Don't plan a big production, or your sit-down dinner plans will seldom materialize. The good china lends a nice touch but isn't necessary. Turn off the phone and let the answering machine pick up your calls. Listen to soothing music rather than the blaring television. Light candles to add a bit of romance to the room if you like. Provide a relaxing atmosphere for your evening meal, and watch it become nourishment for your marriage as well as your body.

If you're too busy to sit and eat, you're too busy.

PERSONAL NOTE: Barry and I eat dinner together pretty much every night, and we try to have at least three nights a week where all three children are with us. Most weeks, we have at least the two girls for five to six nights a week. When it's time for dinner, we put on a classical music CD, quietly in the background, and we sit and talk to each other during dinner. Everyone gets an opportunity to talk about their day, and it just gives us some scheduled time to reconnect and make sure we're all up to speed on what is going on in the family.

My wife and I eat dinner together every night, and when we have our children the same will happen. None of this eating dinner at different times. That's not how a family works.

Occasionally, because of the schedules and activities the children are involved in, especially as they have gotten into their teen years, it's impossible to have all three of them here every night.....but anyone who can be is expected to be here for dinner, which is always at or as near as possible to 6 PM.
