Rachel (November 3, 2006)

for my daughter's 14th birthday

Tell me the secret
to your beauty

how you have learned
so much in
so little time

you came into my world
already wise
but still willing
to listen to me

serene, strong
and touched by divinity

like a tree made of
sunlight and love

the world is waiting
for you to dive
into its opulent splendor
but I ask
as everyone else discovers
one of God's greatest
creations:
don't forget about us
the ones who see
all things good and right
under your halo

in another world
I would've seen you
from afar and been
amazed

but thankfully
in my world
we live under the same roof
and share meals together
and we laugh and embrace
and you kiss Mom and me goodnight

and still
I am amazed.

A wonderful ode.

My oldest b-day was the forth and I've often thought how strange he had this...wisdom you know? I think I've probably learned more from him than the other way around.

Glad to see you posting, too...

Wow, these lines particularly blew me away. What a special young lady your daughter must be.
