Goodbye Ed Bradley and Gerald Levert

There are people that you don't know personally but you do know them. You know them because you see them in the news, on television, buy their CDs, listen to their news report or their music. You admire the person they are, their personality, their public persona.

They become a part of your life because you know you can listen to them and trust that they are giving you information that is solid and worthwhile for you to know; you are listening to their music and you love the way they sing, make you feel good and just admire in general. They become people you get to know over the years just because of who they are and the career they have.

Last week two of those people I know but I don't know personally died. I had no idea that they were ill. Ed Bradley, CBS Journalist, who many may know because of his co-reporting role on CBS' 60 Minutes on Sunday nights. He was 65 years old.

Gerald Levert was an R&B singer, a very soulful one at that. I loved his music and admired him because of his love for his craft and how much of himself he put into being who he was to his fans. He was very entertaining to watch when he performed. He was 40 years old.

Thanks for posting this.  I heard that someone had died who was only 40, but did not catch the name.  Now I have a name to go with it.

You're welcome Doc. It was a shock to hear really. Especially about Gerald who was so young. His weight issues had something to do with his death I think because his weight kept going up an down and he died of a heart attack. So young. Ed was pretty ill too and he didn't look ill at all. He looked older, yes, but not ill. My dad died at his age too. It is sad.

Sorry I knew nothing of Gerald Levert, but I'll add +1 to your thoughts about Ed Bradley.

Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the "main stream media", most especially not the crowd at CBS with Rather, Mapes, and others like them.  60 Minutes always seemed to be a decent news magazine, but too often employed the "gotcha" style of ambush journalism to really meet my standards for what I want in a news show.

With that said though, the journalist I most respected on the show had been Ed Bradley.  I don't believe I even know why, just that he did seem to be someone I could trust.  He seemed to be fair, yet tough.  He seemed to care a lot about the stories he did and the people he talked to and about, and mostly seemed to care about the issues he covered.  He never came off as mean or nasty, and never seemed to be letting his own point of view or beliefs interfere in the story.

I was very sad to hear of his passing.  I joked with a friend that he was taken while others like Wallace, Rather, Rooney and company were left behind because the higher authority wanted a competent journalist and couldn't find one among that crowd.  (Bad joke I know, and Mike Wallace could probably fit that bill in most cases).

Regardless of the bad joke though, I think 60 Minutes probably lost their best in losing Ed Bradley.  For that we all should be a bit sad.
