Gold Stars and Purple Hearts

Spread out across the United States
From California to North Carolina
From Minnesota to Texas
Planes caught to bring us home
Ticket stubs and gas receipts
Closest things we've got to memories
Mothers get gold stars and purple hearts
We get pieces of paper
Pictures and stories only things we have left
A plot of earth to pay respects
Sometimes only ashes and memories
And the tears in our eyes
From Moose Lake to San Diego
From Iraq to home, sweet home
Our class size keeps on dwindling
Who'll remember us when we're gone?
Thoughts of smiles and birthday parties
Keggers in dark fields
Nicknames given without a thought
Childhood carried to the grave
Gold stars and purple hearts
We'd wear them on our sleeves
But friends of dead don't get too much
Handful of memories and receipts
How are we supposed to tell everyone?
Sometimes it's hard to hide the tears
Hand them our mileage forms?
Hide our broken hearts and continue?
We've got no badges to explain
We've only got our words
No gold stars or purple hearts
Just ticket stubs and gas receipts
Spread out across the continent
There aren't enough gold stars for friends
Families come first of course,
But we all remember till
the end.
