I know there are more harmful things to obsess on, but is it cool to let your child become so obsessed in a set of game cards that he completely goes off his rocker?

I think kids today would be better off playing more outside and getting off "activities" such as : video games, ugly rap music, game cards...etc. What ever happened to neighborhood baseball/football/basketball games, tobaggoning and sledding, snowball fights, swimming, skating/rollerblading?

Even the old commercials, "This is Your Kid on Drugs" don't hold a candle to this:

I agree with you. Its a shame that more parents dont realize ( or perhaps dont care ) about how ridiculous their children's obsessions are becoming. I'm not saying this for all children, I know some ( like my nephews ) who may play video games for about 4 hrs each week ( if that ) and spend the rest of it in sports or outdoor/alternative activities.


I loved my childhood. We spent all four seasons exploring the outdoors, gather all the neighborhood children/ teens for baseball, kickball, basketball or soccer games. Or whatever. My mother monitored how much time we spent watching the TV, and monitored the context of what we watched. But we were greatly encouraged to take part in activities that were physical , and/or educational. I mean even a hike in the woods, we were taught about all sorts of cool survival things. Now sadly these days, kids cant be "bothered" to do any of the sort.. Its a sad sad thing in my opinion.

First of all...that kid is insane. At least he's not doing drugs, eh? Although judging by that reaction...it makes you wonder.

Ah...I won't lie, I got caught up in that craze back in the day. However, I don't think I ever got THAT excited about...well, anything ever.

i was having a related topic discussion with a coleague the other day....

i pointed out that when someone is not a participant in any hobby, that the money and time people spend on the hobby (esp the money) is baffling to them. think about it, if you are into videogames, for exxample...the 600 for a ps3 and 60-70 bucks a new game are probably a much fairer price to you than to the guy who doen't play. it may be a lil pricy to you if you are on a tight budget, but the cost vs. the benefit are certainly understandable. to the non participant tho, ANY amount of money spent is usually considered ridiculous and a waste.

the same is true if you are into fishing. to you, the money spent on a quality rod and reel are worth it. to someone who doesn't fish, they can't understand why someone would fork out more money on a fishing rod than absolutely necessary. those folks would buy the zebco 15 dollar special at k-mart and consider that a great expense vs. the benefit.

to a car enthusiast, the dollars blown at the barrett jackson auctions are justified. to someone who sees cars as "a to b" transportation, the amounts are absurd.

to a girl into the newest styles, the prices are right in line. to her boyfriend or husband, they are insane.
