Windowed Mode?

It was mentioned in an earlier thread that GalCiv could be played in a window. I have my destop set to 1280x1024. How do I activate windowed mode?

Thanks,

Windowed mode is an unsupported mode of play that requires you to run at greater than/equal to 1024x768res and 16 bit color. It'll be a seperate download on Stardock Central as a seperate exe of the most recient build.

I don't see why windowed mode would be desireable. It takes more resources in my experience, at least in XP Pro.

It doesn't use any more resources, it depends on how you want to play. I sometimes play windowed mode. But windowed mode is one of those extra benefits available only to people who have purchased the game. It'll be available for GalCiv customers as an unsupported download on SDCentral on the 26th.

Ok cool. Because I just remembered I used to play a game in window mode while watching my stocks.

"Which build of GalCiv are you running and where did you get it?"

I don't actually have the game, Frog. I was considering buying it, though, and wanted to know about playing the game in a window. I run a dual-monitor system, so running something in a window has its distinct advantages.

I was hoping the game could be played in something higher than 1024x768, full screen.

I will wait to see what others say before I decide on whether to purchase the game or not.

I helped Cari-Elf with a small problem with the mp3 player in the game, she then sent me a "test-exe" to try and it was for windowed mode. I launched the game and was greatly surprised, I never imagined that a game would run so smoothly in windowed-mode. So now I have problems deciding wich I like to play. LOL

I'm also running my desktop with an extended desktop, my main card is a gforce 3 and my secondary monitor is run off of a gforce 2, but for some reason, windowed GalCiv dosen't play nicely on my second monitor (Of course, nothing rally does). Just a forewarning, but at least it's easier to minimize it and use other programs if necessary.

Review will probably start trickling out pretty soon. I'm trying to keep my cool, but obviously anxious beyond reason!

If we download the "unsupported window mode exe" can we still use that one to run it in fullscreen mode? If not, can we easily swap between the two exes? And in fullscreen can we alt-tab anyway? :)

Yes, you can alt-tab in full-screen, but it's slow. A windowed mode exe would probably just be a differently-named copy of galciv.exe with a few changes.

If you download the windowed version it does not overlay the full screen version so you will still have both and can run either.
I also run on a 19in monitor at 1280 by 1024 and both versions seem fine to me.

My native screen resolution is 1280x1024 so running at 1024x768 fuzzies the image a little bit.

Does this mean one of the two can be run at a resolution greater then 1024x768?

I look forward to trying the windowed version.
