Icon 1 (Entire Network)

Before I say anything else, I would like to state that the overall style of this entire set of icons by Pete Draper's article on Pearlescent Spray PaintLink I did end up making several changes to his sample texture before I decided to recreate it from scratch. However, I was only able to do so based on the information I learned in his article. It's truly a great read, and his articles there, 3DWorld, and Deconstructing the Elements in 3ds max are also great learning resources.
In the following series, I will be creating a set of icons created in 3ds max. I will attempt to post and very briefly explain each icon's article. I'm not much of a writer, but here it goes...
The first icon I'm posting is The Entire Network icon. It's the plain globe icon.
Model:
This icon's model was created using the Sphere Tool with a radius of 40.0 and 48 Segments.
Texture:
This icon's texture was made using a 3 part composite material.
The base material is a standard multi-layer. This was used to place the earth bitmap (made in PS) and create the proper reflection for the pearl like material.
The second material was used to add the blue shading to the outline of the sphere.
The third material was used to add a reflection map (from in 3ds max 8) to the object.
