Rumors of a Fallout / Interplay resurrection have started again only this time they have come from a more reliable source. According to a SEC filing by none other than the intellectual property owner Interplay, the Fallout franchise will return to games via an MMOG. The formerly dead company hopes to bank on the still strong fanbase of the brand, which has an estimated 350,000 people with numerous fansites.
As for the new title itself, "The Fallout MMOG will be developed in the highly recognized Fallout post Nuclear Apocalyptic world giving consumers an ongoing virtual experience of today's life as if the cold war, which lasted for the best part of the second half of last century, had led to a nuclear disaster."
The filing also states that the title will follow the standard subscription based template of most MMOGs and that they expect to see a return on their investment in three years, with the title turning profitable after the first year. Of note in the filing is that Interplay seems to be trying to ride on some of World of Warcraft's brand recognition when they tell investors that "Interplay's management was involved in the World of Warcraft project at Vivendi." Production on the unnamed project is expected to start in January 2007, good turnabout for a dead company, with the title's launch in Q3 2010.
