Take a tip from role-playing

fleet combat resources

Okay, I asked elsewhere if anyone remembered the TSR role playing game Star Frontiers. It would make an excellent reference source for fleet battles, somewhat with the mechanics but more so for the weaponry/technology, mainly when using boarding parties. Another good game, but a heck of a lot more in depth and probably way too much overkill is Space Opera. I know, they're role playing. But, if the devs wanted to take a look at some really interesting ideas, maybe one of them will check it out and see for themselves.

I'd be pleased if we had the remote chance of capturing an enemy ship during a combat resolution and gleaning even 1 technology from it. Though it should only be from those technologies actually aboard the ship.

stealing tech from battles would make warmongers even more powerful..

that's only assuming the peace-loving hippies aren't victorious. all other things being equal, a peaceful but powerful defender stands just as much to gain as the offender.

And who says they have to immediately get it. Maybe make it so that they have pay X amount of credits to get it.

AHA! Bribes will always soften the deal...

That's actually a good idea. I love finding ships(found 3 rangers once) but stealing a ship during combat! That would be, simply put, awesome. I always get a little pissed when I influence a planet into my control but don't get any of the ships in orbit.

I hate when a civ surrenders to you and all of their ships and bases are gone!! wtf man, wtf....

Oh yeah, being able to steal ships in combat would be awesome, even if the chances were remote.

To balance things, (and make sense), the ship should be severely damaged and its level reset.

They've apparently fixed that in DA, there is a ship dispersement system.

I don't know about stealing ships, but I do think it would be cool to be able to analyze the wreckage of ships you've destroyed and either get a technology you don't have that is on the ships, or research points towards it. Perhaps this would add a use for the survey module once all anomalies are gone?

1) IIRC, the talk I read about DA post-surrender ship transfers didn't specifically mention starbases. I think in code terms those are a child of the same parent object as mobile ships, but I can also imagine them being abandoned rather than transferred. Otherwise, surrenders are about to get *much* more worth winning at least from AIs with resource mines.

2) I think we need a major forum node for GCIII Fantasies. I also long for some post-combat salvage that yields BC &/or tech, but I don't hold much hope for seeing it in GCII. On the other hand, these Stardock folks are clearly compulsive game builders, so it never hurts to work on the wish list...

3) IMO, the more worthwhile thing to gain from thing about at-table RPGs is respect for the story parts of the game. I'm not suggesting that GC follow MoO in abandoning a mildly campy tone, but putting in some more creative work on the flavor text might broaden appeal enough to improve the funding situation for the devs. It never hurts to remember that the modern US economy is driven by stories at least as much as facts
