Custom ships

I decided to change a few things on my custom race, and now it seems I can't build any of my custom ships. Is this true or am I just not looking hard enough?

Ship designs are linked to the ship style you choose on the appearance tab in the race setup screen, so if you change that you will only have old designs available to you that were made with that same style.

So, if I built a ship with human parts and continue to play using the human base models then I should still have my custom designs?

You should, yes. The designs will appear once you have the appropriate technologies to build them if you are using the same style they were designed in.

Ok, i've got all the tech researched to build one of my custom medium ships but it's still not an option to build. I'm using the same race ship design as before, but I can't get it. I have all the XML files for my custom ships, and I jsut upgraded my version of GC2. I saw in another post about downloading SmartException, so I did. I really really want to use my ships. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure you also have the needed miniaturization level?

You know what, that's most likely it. I didn't even think about that! *smacks self in forehead* Sorry to bug you man.

Nope, that didn't work either. Does it, by chance, have anything to do with the bonus pack stuff I downloaded? I don't want to have to re-start my game but if it'll get my ships back i'll be willing to go through with it.

If you installed the bonus pack, you've likely reverted your game to a mishmash of 1.0X and the version you had installed before (the 'Bonus Pack' is actually the 1.0X patch, and if you install that after already updating to a newer version it will break the game in various ways). In which case it could be part of if not all of the problem. The only way to fix it is to reinstall and patch up to the latest without using the bonus pack (all the bonus stuff is included in all future patches anyway).

Do you mean reinstall the entire game? That might be a major problem since I have no clue what I did with my serial number.

Yes.

If you registered the game previously, just go to https://www.stardock.com/support/ and provide your email to get a list of any regitered SD product serials sent to you. Alternately so long as nothing else has changed since you activated the game, you should be able to just keep a copy of the sig.bin file and restore it after you reinstall and repatch to 1.4.

Ok, I reinstalled the game(and I copied my custom ship XML files to an external hard drive) and now it doesn't seem like anything changed. Is that supposed to happen? I mean, all my saved races and games and ship XMLs are still there...it looks like I never took it off.

Did you also update back to v1.4? The ships were changed to use the XML format after the first or second patch, so the 1.0 version off the disc (as well as the bonus pack version) will not recognize them at all.

According to SDC I have version 1.40X.067 which I assume is the one I need. I really am sorry to be such a pain today.

Are you starting a new game or loading a save?

I was going to load my save(simply because I have a class 32 planet that i'd absolutley love to keep) but if I need to start a new one I will...not a problem. Personally, i kinda' enjoy the beginning rush of getting everything around you as fast as you can.

That's because the majority of games today puts configuration and savegame files in My Documents, and they are never un-installed.

Yeah, mine are in My Document/My Games/GalCiv2/ships

I thought it kinda' strange that they were all there.

But that raises another question actually. All the files from the bonus pack(and there's a lot of them it would seem) are still there too. Should I just delete those?

The bonus pack shouldn't have put anything in My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2 that I recall, but nothing in that folder is vital (the only things there are your own saves, settings, and customizations). If the entire folder is moved or removed, the game will simply recreate it along with a default prefs.ini when it is run.

Ok, now, after checking I found out that the thing in my ships folder is one of the mods I found to give me some extra stuff(an extra human hull or two). So I should, now, be able to build my cusotm ships?

Tell you what, just zip some of the xml and shipcfg files for ships that are not appearing up, and email them to me. My address is kryo [at sign] stardock [dot] com. I'll check them out myself to see if they work.

Ok, I sent the e-mail. I'm going to try starting a new game also to see if that works or not.
