CPL's Got Game

CPL Developing FPS For Online Competition

The Cyberathlete Professional League has announced that they will be bringing an all new FPS to the market in a playable form by the end of 2007. The CPL is most known for being the embodiment of professional video game tournaments but is branching out with their upcoming console and PC game Severity.

According to the CPL Severity will be based around team-versus-team and one-versus-one play modes, an apparent multiplayer spectacular. The game is also being designed to ensure "unprecedented support for gamers worldwide playing in online and live competitions both casually and professionally."

The CPL's newly funded development studio, headed by former studio director at Ritual Entertainment Tom Mustaine, is using an unspecified id Software engine for the title. The firm plans to tack on enhanced tournament support, spectator modes and detailed statistics tracking to the engine.

Seeing as the Doom 3 engine is the only id Software engine not available through the GPL, and not extremely old, it is very likely that Severity will be built around that.
