Skipping techs

Hi,

I have a question that bugged me for a while now. If I trade techs to get "Advanced Logistics" and not have "Enhanced Logistics" will I have less logistics points that a civilization which has both?

There are few techs that add % or number to something ever time you research them. Can you skip some of the intermediate step and get only the last one, or do you have to research all of them?

the question is simple for weapons or defense for example. If somebody is selling you "Stinger IV" and you do not have Singer I - III it is not a problem, since 4 is much smaller and you do not need 1, 2 or 3. But what about the techs I mentioned above? In the same category with Logistics I can mention miniaturization and life support for example.

Thanks in advance.

You don't need the lesser tech to research ones after the one you traded for, but if you don't get those lesser techs you won't get their associated bonuses either. So in such cases as they do give ability bonuses just for having been researched, you'll want to grab them even if you can trade for the techs after them.

You should have to have the lesser techs.

EX: You want Stinger IV, but to get Stinger IV you must first trade(or research) Stingers I , II, and III.

Usually if you can trade for a more advanced tech they will give you its prereqs as well. I know this dosen't work for Terraforming and one or two others though.

A good guide to follow is this... any older tech that would cause the AI to grumble if you tried to trade it to them with a more advanced one, is a tech you can skip with no penalty.

Thank you all for your replies. It is indeed how I thought it would work. Going back to research now then.

Thanks.

There's an annoying bug here. Take trade, for example. If you skip "trade", you're not allowed to establish trade routes. That's a little more serious than a missing "associated bonus."

I was going to use that to cripple my opponents in my last game. Never did but I'm pretty sure it would work. The AI doesn't research lesser technologies.

Your thought was to give them advance trading and they not get trade so they could not estabilish trade routes?

Sounds like a neat trick! A good way to slow down the AI on much harder levels. If it worked that is!
Not cheating either since you would be using somthing designed to be annoying for the player, somthing designed to stop you taking shortcuts in technology and turning it against the game. Sounds like martial arts, good one Grasshopper hehehe

Correct. This goes beyond "no tech trading" into the realm of "nobody can make money except for me."

Hmmm... I'll have to try this out... in the mean time, assuming it is true, sounds like an "AI gifting flaw"... not that we've had one of those before.

Very interesting and very unique. Hadn't even thought in that direction. Very Evil of you Wheel. I think I'll try it too.

in the game i'm playing at the moment, i traded from the beginning with the Drengin. Eventually they conquored all the AI players then promptly declared war on me. Unfortunately for them it was a trap! the shok loss of income from my trade has resulted in them having no money to upgrade their ships to counter my ships.

Both of us are now quite broke but my ships are wiping the flaw with them, using very high point defence against their missiles. They carnt touch me! Mwwwaaaahhh

I'm not so sure this "AI Gifting Flaw" would really work. Wouldn't the AI just research the prerequisite by themselves? Since the initial Trade tech is of high value, I assume they would...

The AI doesn't research lesser technologies if it already has greater ones. Until the developers fix it, it's fair game.

Research trade
Research advanced trade
Give advanced trade to everyone without trade
Screw everybody that took the bait.

The real danger comes from the AI having it traded to them from somone else. To make this trick work, you would somehow have to be able to develop advanced trade before 'any' of the other races developed trade.

Play DA as Korx.

True. It can backfire but, like racing to planetary invasion, you can race to advanced trade and at least take some players out of commission. The AI won't trade for lesser technology in addition to not researching lesser technology.

Incorrect. The AI will not trade for lesser technology relating to ship components. All other technology, it will.
