Negative influence from Research facilities

Bug or feature?

I noticed that in the latest beta, research facilities appear to make it easier to influence a planet. Each lab generates -1 influence points, which is multiplied in the event it is on a tile which has a research bonus.

So I'm intrigued to know whether this is an intentional addition, or an accidental one.

Actually, while I'm not wrong about there being negative influence coming from labs, it doesn't appear to be the only cause. It seems that more populated worlds, such as but not restricted to the homeworld, are subject to influence penalties, but those with just an initial colony only have a penalty when they have labs.

That is a strange thing. Realistically, technology should increase influence. Take Japan for example... do you think their technology level reduces their influence on the world stage or increases it?

i think tech level is kinda ainfluential (it all depends on how you use it) if your tech leads to trade goods, then it should be influential via the trade good, however if your high tech leads to advanced weapons that make your neighbors twitchy it should be negatively influential via the weapons

if that makes any sense (i'm taking your anaology of japan, who is influential because of all their trade in technology... but if that tech were say, nuclear war heads, we would have an entirely different viewpoint towards them)

Then the research buildings themselves should have no effect on influence, because it is the tech that is researched that would influence in a positive or negative way.

But then negative influence would only come in galciv for research, if you were researching tidal disruption. I carn't recall any other weapons of mass destruction techs in the game?
