Game freezing during game setup

Graphical errors and freeze

I'm trying to run DA and the game always freezes before I'm done setting up the game, customizing my race, etc. The graphics distort, the music plays for a bit, and then freezes. I can't even ctrl+alt+del out of it. I have read some other threads and have enabled the hardware mouse pointer, but that did not seem to have any effect. I also have the latest nvidia drivers.

Just to make sure this wasn't exclusive to DA I tried starting a regular GalCivII game and had the same issue.

You may need an audio driver update. Those are pretty old.

It might also be better to run the game at your desktop resolution of 1280x1024.

But I would more suspect those audio drivers are simply too old or buggy, especially with the hard lockups.

I do have the latest drivers for that card, 4104:
http://ts.hercules.com/eng/index.php?pg=view_files&gid=2&fid=23&pid=18&cid=1

Also, using my desktop's resolution doesn't change anything. I still get the same freeze.
Are you running in SLI?

According to the debug, the game exited normally. Please freeze the program, then post the debug immediately after so we can see at which point it is stopping.

4101, but yes you do have the latest.

Don't forget to try the game at 1280x1024.

Kryo, no I'm not running in SLI. I froze the program again at 6:28 CST, but the debug.err I have is for 3:13 CST. It looks like it didn't update. I'll go ahead and put it in this reply though.

Moosetek, I've been trying in 1280x1024. No dice.

I took a couple pictures of my screen with my digital camera when it froze. The shots aren't that great, but it should give you an idea of the graphical errors that occur when it happens.

It's possible you have a defective video card.

You might consider reseating the card and uninstalling\reinstalling the drivers. Also, check to make sure the cards fan is operating normally.

Bear in mind that DA and GC2 each have their own debug.err (DA writes one in GalCiv2\DarkAvatar where its other files are at).

Has it worked fine for you in the past, and only started doing this recently?
Kryo, thanks I didn't realize that DA had its own debug.err. I'll post it below.

Also, the game did work for me in the past. I purchased GC2 several months ago and played it quite a bit. A few months went by and I hadn't played it any longer. My motherboard died so I decided to replace it as well as upgrade my videocard (from a 6800GT AGP to the 7900GS PCIe I have now). Skip ahead another couple weeks of playing NWN2 just fine I decide to pre-order DA and check out the beta. Now I have the problems I made this post about in both the vanilla GC2 and DA.

Below is the latest debug.err from the correct directory this time...

Those lines suggest a problem either in the video driver or the card itself.

When your mb died, did you replace the power supply as well, or only the mb and video card?

The PCIe cards require a power connector, and if you are using the old power supply it may not be up to the task of powering the video card properly.
Well, there's definitely a problem with your video.

First thing you can do: get Driver Cleaner Pro and follow the directions very carefully to totally remove your video drivers, then reinstall from nVidia's latest available version. This will ensure something didn't just get messed up in the last update you did, or if you didnt reformat entirely when you overhauled your system.

If that doesn't fix it, just try tweaking settings in the advanced display properties and see if it has an effect (buffering options in particular).

If you're still having the problem after that, there may be an issue with your video card itself. If you've got a friend with a PCIe card you can borrow, you may want to try swapping them and see if the other card does the same thing; also check power, etc.

I recognize this issue.

Turn ON the hardware cursor and it'll go away.  It's specific to the 7900 (I have a 7950 on my new mega machine).  It seems to be some conflict between the nVidia drivers and Bink (it happens on the setup screen because you have the link bink galaxy thing.  No idea the cause.

I installed Driver Cleaner Pro, removed my display drivers with them, and reinstalled the latest nVidia drivers. I also made sure that hardware cursor was turned on. This time I got to play for about 15 minutes before it crashed the same way in the Shipyard while I was putting together a new colony ship.

in the shipyard...

overheating maybe? dunno.
I don't think that's likely as I have been playing Rome: Total War and Neverwinter Nights 2 for long stretches of time without any sort of problem.
It turns out that for some reason enabling AA is behind the freezes. I turned AA off last night and was able to play for several hours without incident. Ships and planets didn't look as nice, but ahh well.
