Wahoo Studios announced an ambitious MMO RTS titled Saga which is to live inside a persistent world and will be supported by the sales of booster packs, rather than a subscription fee. The title is currently in closed alpha testing, with open alpha testing beginning at the end of the month. Sign-ups for the alpha testing spots are already available and beta testing is scheduled for Spring 2007.

In Saga players will notice that logging off does not put the game on pause. Instead the city and armies that you have managed to create continue to function as your guild wars and teammates continue to change the landscape around you. Even your resources continue to collect while the kingdom defends itself from espionage missions and assassins.

For those few World of Warcraft players here's how the title would be compared to your time sink. “Think World of Warcraft from a thousand feet up… instead of having just a character, you own hundreds of troops and fight massive battles against other players,” says Jason Faller, Saga Creator and Executive Producer.

Saga will merge a bit of the MMO scene into the RTS genre by adding questing, permanent experience gains and an auction house for trading of spells and troops, while maintaining the friendly wars, espionage and resource gathering of an RTS.

The 'booster packs' will bring in the idea of collectible gaming to Saga in the form of random troops and spells that can be accessed thru them. Instead of being forced to pay extra a player can decide how much he wants to spend, or even trade/beg for an item in the game's auction house. The spells and troops are to be used to customize an army, adding an extra layer of strategy.
