Making peace with the enemy of your alliance without backlash (game #5)

Brad, in your gameplay example #5 you make peace with the Altarians while your ally (Drengin) is still at war with them. You wrote:
"Okay, I admit, I'm a little bit lame. The Altarians are down for the count but I really can't deal with them right now. The Drengin won't care about this as long as they don't need my help."
So there's no political backlash in making peace with a mutual enemy as long as your ally seems to have the war reasonably well in hand? Does it matter who initiated the peace talk? IOW, what might have happened if you sued for peace? ANd how do you determine if your ally will or will not have any problems with you making peace--how do you gauge such a thing?
Thx
