Hannibal Rising

Any "Silence of the Lambs" out there?  If so, dont see this movie.  Because as horrible as the earlier ones are (Silence, red Dragon), this one is not.  Except for the cannibalism.

SPOILER WARNING!  Read no Further if you dont want to be spoiled on the movie.

Ok, still here (all 1 of you?)?  The origin of Hannibal is in 1944 Lithuania.  The eastern front.  Some Lithuanians, trying to break free of Russia, have hooked up with some Germans.  Cept the Germans dont hold to the bargain and so they go mercenary.

And find Hannibal and his sister.  And eat her (that was not uncommon actually over there in that time frame).  So the rest of the movie is Hannibal fulfilling his promise to avenge his little sisters death.  Not really bad actually.  You find yourself actually rooting for him.  Until he starts eating the cheek of a living victim!  Oh well, I guess they needed that to pull in some more money.

But seriously, this is not a "Silence of the lambs" type of movie.  It is no where near that good.  It is a "Get them suckers' type of movie and that is why you are actually cheering for him.  Until his Aunt tells him "There is very little left in you to love" .  That kind of brings home that vengence is not a path, but an end.  And once you have sated yourself to it, what then?  Sure we all want to wail on the bad guys and girls.  But if that is our life purpose, what then?

The critics gave this one a 2 thumbs down (since after that line from his aunt, he still ate the cheek and killed the last cretin).  But I like the fact that they could at least make one think about the vengence issue without lecturing us.  (I guess the end was for the horror fans). I give it 2.5 out of 4.

And if you are into the Hannibal lecter series, I recommend it.

Currently 18% on the tomatometer, but that means nothing to hard-core fans. Obsessions in general are fascinating. I had a forensic psychologist as a patient at one time. He treated only sex offenders in prison. He said that they are a weird mix of sexually obsessive-compulsive together with a psychopathic absence of guilt. One man would hallucinate female privates everywhere he looked and I don't mean the military kind. Hannibal rising...no never mind.

I read it and I still intend to see it!! I'm that gory!

But I'll wait for the pay per view or the dvd!

Actually one review I read called it a real gory one and said it was 'up there' as the first film was, not the second one, which he didn't like!

It has its gory moments.  But it does not have gore for gore's sake.

Some info for you doc:

Thomas Harris is known as a reclusive writer who hit it big with Red Dragon (a great story) and Silence of the Lambs. I read once that Harris was plumb out of ideas but because Hannibal was a successful follow-up to Silence, he wrote Hannibal Rising. I'm not condemning the man (he has, after all, made a fortune from movies), I'm just saying that he has nothing new. As a frustrated reader I waited for years for Harris to give us a humdinger again and he just re-invented Lecter. My fears were confirmed when his publishers started pushing Black Sunday, a poor first novel from 1975. In bookshops now and thirty years old.

INteresting.  But then most writers never get the one break, so he should be happy he got that much.  Still, it was not a bad movie (I was expecting to hate it and did not).

I did not care for Red Dragon either.

I got Toni 'Hannibal Rising', the novel, for Christmas. It is nothing better than wonderfully dumb summer reading. The book read like a poor screenplay adaption. Terrible but perfect for lying in the sun and not being challenged. As for the movie, we'll wait until it is out on DVD. I'm not going to waste the price of a movie ticket on it.

The price of having a son really into horror movies I guess.
