Proverbs 7, 9

Chapter 8 is long enough to be done by itself later

In case any of you are wondering what happened to chapters 5-6.... Because of their subject matter, I marked my Bible study about them as "Adult Content". Well, apparently posts that are marked that way can only be read by adult JoeUser members. So that's why you couldn't see it. (Of course, I don't even know if anyone is reading these at all. LOL!) Today's passage is rather "adult" as well, but I'm gonna try and keep the graphic-ness to a minimum because I want everyone to be able to read it.

Anyway, click where it says "Link" to go to the online text of this passage....

7:7-8 -- The Bible describes men who engage in promiscuity as "devoid of understanding". When you stop and consider just how many people there are like that in this world, it's pretty sobering. I saw a poll in the newspaper the other day that was talking about how most people believe pre-marital sex with anyone and everyone is perfectly all right. Clearly God's ways are, in fact, higher than ours.

7:13-14 -- This reminds me of a guy at work, who is a good example of so many people today (especially here in the Bible Belt). Here the harlot is talking about the sacrifices she's made to God. Of course, she's clearly not a Godly woman, but she still tries to come across as one. There are so many people (like this guy I work with) who hold on to some vestige of Christianity but arbitrarily draw their own lines when it comes to their convictions. They want to have fun, so they say things like, "Homosexuality is an awful sin, but it's perfectly OK for me to have as many immoral heterosexual relationships as I want." You know, an arbitrary standard, created by man, that doesn't match up with God's standard is only a false security blanket.

7:10-18; 9:1-6 -- Here we have an interesting contrast between two women: the harlot and the personification of wisdom. Both of them have prepared their house in some way for visitors. Both of them present very attractive offers. However, one of them leads to life and the other leads to death. Which one will you choose?

9:7-9 -- The world is full of wise men and scoffers, and you can tell who is in which category as soon as you try to lovingly correct them. Solomon says here that we shouldn't even bother trying to rebuke scoffers and get them to change their ways. They don't care. It's kind of like when Jesus said, "Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine." If you know they won't listen to you, save your breath for someone who will.

9:13-18 -- Here's another woman who tries to entice people to come to her house. Notice that she preys on the simple and foolish ones who "don't know that the dead are there". The way to avoid the foolish woman (portrayed in some translations as a personification of folly in general) is to study the Bible and learn wisdom. Then you WILL know what happens to her guests, and you won't end up being one of them.
