If you open the theme in builder mode (right click on the DX icon in the systray), you can then browse the objects by clicking the Object navigator buton.

I hope that gets you started.  Let us know if you need more help or direction.

yes

yes

'.png' format allows for transparency in DX. You can easily make another button with any graphics program that can create in png format (ex., Photoshop)

I don't know or have never tried to export an image from a theme to my graphics editor but imagine it wouldn't be terribly difficult to do. I have dissected some themes and objects to get a better understanding of scripts and such. One way to do this is to duplicate the file (so you don't ruin the original) and change the extension to 'zip' and extract the images from there.

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX

here you can find all pictures of the theme to change what you want.
make a copy of file of current theme folder in an other folder and work on copy.
with dxbuilder in object propriety in state select picture you have make.
but i think if you don't know too much dxtheme building: just open picture you want change with photoshop make your change and save in same name in current theme folder.
save the theme on an other name and reload it!
