Space Sharks and early game

What do you do in the early game when the space sharks are running around. Last night in my first gold game, I selected a merchant organization and was busy setting up my commerce empire when the first space shark appeared. They are pretty tough to beat when you only have defenders. Then the intergalactic zoo let three more out. When the four of them killed all of my trade routes and destroyed all of my ships and space stations, I stopped the game. :notsure:

What can you do early on to fight these things?

Also, I noticed that trade routes changed from .90 to 1.01. Trade used to get me 3 routes and advanced trade got me five routes, that is down to 2 and the 3 respectively. Bummer for a merchant kingdom. :sniff!:

Early in the game one fights them the way the ancient an honorable Japanese fought Godzilla.

Either give it to someone far away from you that you dislike, or try to lead the space sharks away from you with a scout ship. They seem to chase things, so that might work, and I've read here that it does.

I have not seen them since the beta. they were slow then, 1 parsec per month.
Avoid them, move your freighters around, and don't keep anything in orbit that could be destroyed.
Keep cash to buy something in case of an invasion.
And like Elrikk said, flee....

I had a space shark distorying everything I can throw at it I had to build my first battleships before I could deal with them.

Why is it that with GC bad things always happen to us and good things happen to the Aliens. I would just love one of those annoying Alien races that thinks our skin looks tasty deal with Space Sharks for a change.

The only problem is that the little freight lines that the computer controls will not avoid the sharks. Basically they closed down all of my trade lines everytime I created one.

The space stations are the biggest hit. They are costly to build and with four sharks on the map, it was going to be a long time before I could rebuild all four of them. (Some had multiple upgrades)

I guess that you have to weather the storm until you can build real warships, then go shark hunting - aye Cap'n Quint. ;p

When the UP comes up to determine where to put the zoo or prison, you they will escape at some thine in the game. so vote to send it to the largest treath. you'll loose the extra bonus but when they escape, they will damage someone else.

I gotta admit, the space monsters don't particularly appeal to me. They seem to be the way to fix the
idea that unfortunate shit isnt supposed to just happen
which you can't do much about...

i wouldn't mind the space monsters breaking loose SOMETIMES, but not like F'ing clockwork. Yeesh...

Agreed, I think that the space monsters should start off weaker, but if the exhibit is built later in the game, then they can be stronger.

I also think that the Space Shark needs to be added to the GalCiv combat calculator so that people will understand just how *NASTY* those things are before saying "Sure, I'll take that attraction!"

I kind of like the large randomness to it all. If it happens that early, it's not like you spent that much time in that game anyway. Sometimes, crap happens. :p

Trick with space sharks is NOT to attack them until you have advanced ships (which you almost never have when the sharks appear). Use a ship to lead the sharks away from anything important (like starbases). If they're heading for a starbase, upgrade you defense to maximum. You may also want to change you research priorities to defense and new ship types to allow you deal with them. They are SLOW. You should be able to escape with just a few freighters lost and maybe a starbase or two at worst.

Regarding the destruction of Starbases by space sharks: when I build a starbase the first thing I do is add all possible defensive modules before anything else. Even two or three defensive modules can give a starbase an excellent shot at taking out a space shark.

Good point I took out a space shark one time by building up the defenses of a system it was after.

I bought in four turns four combat transports they have higher defense points than a defender. The stupid shark could not take it.

Should work with starbases.

The problem is I find constructors too expensive and they take too long to build early in the game.

The way I deal with these creatures is to build a starbase and add the -1 movement to enemy ships upgrade. That way the sharks cannot move
