A sure sign of a company doing things right.

I was a beta tester for galciv. Last night I was "rewarded" by using the bugged stardock central and wiping out my system's root drive. Twice.

The first time I didn't suspect that it was a stardock problem so I reinstalled windows. I didn't need to but I did. I didn't think it would be a big deal but I really have bought a lot of online stuff this year and I've had to work to get that stuff back.

The thing is, once I realized what had happened ( I was in the middle of my second download and thus suffered a second root dir wipe when I learned ) I was simultaneously shocked, disappointed, amused, and relieved that it WASN'T a virus or a disk failure.

The one thing I wasn't was upset. Oh sure, Brad tried and almost succeeded when he said something along the lines of "that's why you're beta testers." :)

For an instant I almost was upset but I had to laugh.

#1 It was true and
#2 It in no way represented his attitude about the problem ( which was obvious from his myriad other posts on the issue ) but was indicative of his sense of humor. It's like the joke I like to tell in bad times, "aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show"? only not as possibly offensive.

In short I have so much faith in stardock's good will and intentions that even a disaster like this can't dent that and by the lack of negative comments on the scenario I'm certainly not alone.

Nothing else to say really but I'd just like to say that this is a rare scenario indeed and I'd like to commend stardock for putting themselves in a position both with great customer service and great products to be able to suffer something like this without any backlash.

By the way, so far, the show is just fine. :)

Thanks. :) You had me worried at the beginning of this post. :)

You're welcome CariElf.

Truthfully I can't imagine ONE other company that wouldn't have at least mildly ticked me off by having something like this happen. That's why I had to post. It was really groundbreaking because not only wasn't I upset but no one else was either.

Somebody had to point this out IMHO as it's pretty important. It speaks volumes for the company IMHO.

Sorry Jeff, I first heard that old nugget in ninth grade and since I'm a geezer that was CENTURIES before Hudson Hawk. :)

I have no doubt they used it in the movie though. IMHO it is a classic joke but then again I'm a twisted sob. :)

Well on the bright side, we have harvested the organs of part of the SDCentral team. I already have dibs on the kidneys. I read that if you have 4 kidneys, you can drink motor oil.

Well, in theory, anyone can drink motor oil of course. I assume you meant the ability to drink it without obvious harm but as the tick once said " eegads man, what's the point"?

Axxon: I think it would impress chicks.

Brian: We are getting ready to put up release candidate 1 of Stardock Central.

Frogboy, I'm sure it would indeed, but impressing poultry does nothing for me. I'll admit that a plump, well seasoned breast makes my mouth water but...

Oh, oh, CHICKS, oh yes, I get it. I SEE THE POINT. That does make sense. BTW, do you have a moist towellette?

Come on Zack,

You aren't partial to a well seasoned, mouth watering breast?? I wonder why KFC charges extra for one then. :D ;p

Anyone remember a show called "That's Incredible" from 1980? They had a guy eating a bicycle, cut into small pieces, bathed in motor oil.

Wasn't Fran Tarkenton and Cathy Lee Crosby on that show?? If not, forgive my faulty memory.

Hey now, this week I've been trapped eating McDonalds here. No chicken.. Though you know, there is a Boston Market near by...

Yep. They hosted the show. The most memorable thing from the show for me was this tall skinny Indian yogi folding himself into this little plastic box and being sunk under water for 30 minutes.

Best sides ever but for wings I always choose hooters. Or vice versa?? I never can tell.

This happened to me as well and I was not a beta tester. To be honest, because of my support background, I thrive on stuff like this.

The one criteria I had for keeping my temper was the involvement, not of mindless support drones, but of Brad himself.

He was with us until the end last night and thus he has become one of my most respected developers ever.

No harm...No foul

Hey what's wrong with fowl?? After all Brad's the one who mentioned Boston Chicken erm I mean Boston Market.

I'd like to say that I've been reading Brad's stuff for a long while and he is a major reason I am here now. Still, he's one of many and the entire team has handled itself well. This is a class outfit and far more deserving of recognition than it gets. I salute them all.

what *exactly* is your poultry fixation? I'd *really* like to know what triggered it. :)

Had similar feelings myself last night being at the head of the problems. Wound up with some nasty system instabilities due to a wacked-out swap file, so wound up reinstalling windows again onto my newer, faster drive. So at least XP's performing better than ever on the faster drive, but boy I definitely would like to have the last 24 hours back.

But that said, if this had to happen, I'd much rather have had it happen yesterday to a few of us than to have Stardock's reputation ruined if this had gone live to the "public"... And my kudos to Brad and Co as well for quickly addressing the problem and for being attentive to the reports in the first place. There are all to many companies that just blow off such problems as being due to individual system wackiness and don't nip the problem in the bud before it becomes too widespread.

Hoping to get on to actually playing the game now! ;)

Kudos really goes to you guys for saving the day with your quick reports.

My work has been on developing GalCiv. I can't express enough appreciation for your help since you can imagine how us on the GalCiv team would have felt to see our game marred by what is really an update manager that we weren't involved on.

Thankfully, the SDCentral team got right on top of it, found the problem and fixed it before the "GA" date.

But none of that would have been possible without you guys. And I must say, I was really surprised at how technically proficient you guys were.

It was a nice recovery, and the commitment of the GC team to SUPPORT is appreciated.
I sweated until I found out what the problem was.
I expect that this one will be put in the SDC test script.
Lessons learned...

Lesson learned: ensure temp variables are initialized before attempting to manipulate them. :(
