Retail GalCiv Deleted 16 GB of Data

I installed to c:\games\galactic civilizations\ and 16 GB of my
games, saved games, mods, patches, etc. was totally wiped out.
(Then again, it could of been SDC .99a I can't be sure).

Be careful where you install this game. Sufficed to say I'm pissed.

I honoustly don't think GalCiv erased 16GB of files. Must have been something else, like a virus or something.

Yeah, called Stardock.

And I run a virus scan every night at 4:00A. Secondly, I played NWN last night, in my games/ directory. Quit. Updated to SDC .99a. Noticed that C:\*.* was gone. Recovered C:\, not paying attention to the total sub-directory count. Installed SDC .99b. Went to sleep. Went to work. Bought GalCiv from EB. Came home. Installed GalCiv. Noticed that I had to reboot. Went to check how big its footprint was. Noticed I had 16+GB data free on my hard drive.

The only thing left in my games/ directory is Galactic Civilizations.

99a of Stardock Central was..problematic. Sorry about the pain you suffered. And yes, I would probably classify SDC .99a as a virus. Though most viruses are not as destructive as .99a was. :(

How did it hit just games/ and not any of my other directories? Is it because it is first alphabetically? (That would be really weird).

I'm not sure. But I do know that our test box lost its "apps" directory as a result of SDCentral .99a when we were reproducing the problem.

Ironically, the problem was caused by .99a wanting to clean your temp directory and subdirectories. Well it cleaned directories alrightt. :notsure:

/me grimates

But the retail boxed version installer is a standard installer, it's 100% safe. It was just that beta of SDCentral that was available for a few hours yesterday. We pulled it as soon as we could but not before quite a few of us (you, and some of us internally too) experienced some real pain.

So this is why I lost all my apps starting with W and Z. At least all other remaining apps are still avaiable. I thought it was a virus.
