Is software really needed?

I downloaded a skin/theme and it included everything I needed (Windows theme file, windows visual style file and the shellstyle.dll)

I put these files where they needed to be in the c:/windows/resources/themes/luna path, yet they aren't in the drop down box in 'Windows colour Scheme', even after reboot.

Am I missing something like a registry edit or do I really have to download something line wondowblinds or what ever?

OS = XP Pro if that helps any.

Window Blinds runs the file extension .wba

Sounds like you're trying something along the lines of StyleXP (different software)
Just sticking files in folder generally doesn't work.
Windows only allows signed visual styles to run. To run others you need to hack your system. You could try googling uxtheme patcher - some like it, some don't - just remember you're basically hacking in and changing stuff.

WindowBlinds on the other hand doesn't do that. And yes you need software for that.

To change something at your Windows Layout that is different from the standard procedures, you'll need software that do the work for you.
