ship Upgrades

Hi

I'm still fairly new at the game and after playing all night the most powerful ship i had listed was a lowly defender....Went to ship yard and could put together a lot better ship with different types of weapons and armor that i researched..why is it the prebuilt ships keep staying the same though?..reasearching all the good armor and weapons and defender is the best..lol

The core ships have various requirements spread all throught the tech tree (engines, life support, sensors, etc). In any case, you're far better off designing your own with the best techs you have at the moment so you can compete with the AI (it designs its own ships too).
