Shiny Entertainment, the creators of the Earthworm Jim franchise and more recently the developers behind the recent Matrix titles, have signed up with SEGA to produce The Golden Compass based on the upcoming holiday movie. The Golden Compass is based on the first book in the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. The game is currently scheduled for release in Q4 2007 on PC and active consoles.
The title is to feature the likeness of the movie's stars including Daniel Craig and Dakota Blue Richards, whom will play protagonist Lyra Belacqua. Gamers will take control of multiple characters including the protagonist Lyra, her animal buddy Pan and the polar bear Iorek Byrnison, with each character having their own special traits. For example, Lyra's tasks will tend to be more of the stealth nature while Iorek, the armor plated bear, will rely on a much more physical path as he tries to protect Lyra. The Golden Compass will feature 13 different environments, some from the film and some being exclusive to the video game.
